Health, Nutrition and Sanitation

The City Government of Ligao prioritizes the health and nutrition of the City’s residents with its improved health resource facilities and services.

The City Health Center, located in front of the City Hall, provides free medical services and consultations serviced by the City nurses and doctors. The Center offers free dental care and medical tests such as Random Blood Sugar (RBS) test, Electrocardiogram (ECG), Urinalysis, Pap smear, and others. It also gives free immunization to newborns. In addition to its services, the Health Center also extends its services to various barangays through its annual Operation Tuli Program, which presently circumcised a total of 1,196 males.

The City Health Office, with its aim to ensure the health and nutrition of the children, conducts supplemental feeding and provides medicine and vitamins to malnourished children. To date, there were 1,782 malnourished children treated and 2,500 day care pupils being given supplemental feeding every year. The number of children being given vitamins and new born babies being catered by milk feeding has reached thousands and is increasing continuously.

The City Health Unit also established the Tuberculosis-Directly Observed Treatment Short Course or social hygiene center and public-private mix DOTS Program in order to combat Tuberculosis. Presently, 1,104 registered TB patients were cured, while 3,979 pneumonia cases were treated.

Another flagship program of the City Health Office is its mass blood donation, also dubbed as Citizen’s Lifeline Service. The program mainly addresses the problem on availability and adequate supply of safe blood. To date, there are 3,313 units of 500 cc blood collected from 663 donors every year. From the main purpose of collecting blood, the program had also established community involvement and volunteerism among citizens with its promotion and encouragement of donating blood.

The City also maintains a Public Infirmary located in Barangay Paulba. The infirmary provides medical assistance for residents in upland barangays. Recently, a birthing facility was added to its services, that provides basic emergency maternal and new born care.

In addition to the birthing facility in Paulba, same facility was established in Brgy, Maonon in order to serve more clientele. Also with the aim to improve maternal health, pre and post-natal examination, immunization program, and Vitamin A and Iron supplementation are being offered by the City.

Aside from the services given by the City Health Center and City Public Infirmary, Ligao City hosts the 25-bed Josefina Belmonte Duran Memorial District Hospital located in Barangay Tuburan.

Also, recognizing proper sanitation as an essential aspect of health, the City Government provided 1,535 families with toilet facilities, and installed 81 km. of water pipes along with 493 jetmatic pumps.

There are 55 Barangay Health Centers stationed throughout the City intended to serve the remotest and farthest barangay in the City.

In addition, Ligao City hosts a Nutrition and Rehabilitation Center located in Barangay Tuburan. The Center, which was launched in April 2005, caters to malnourished children as well as residents who need medical and other social services.

There are also two private hospitals in the City-- the Dr. Sofronio Garcia Memorial Hospital and Perpetual Help Medical Hospital.
