Situationer

Majority (87%) of the City’s 17,031 households reported that they own the house that they are occupying.  Most households (64%) also reported owning the lots on which their houses were built upon.   It was also observed that most households (almost 96%) dwelt in single detached housing units.  The ratio of the number of households to dwellings is almost one to one indicating that there are ample housing provisions in the City.

The City Government has about 9.38 hectares of land, which host 818 homelots, allotted for resettlement projects.  Those who have been resettled are those who were:

  • Living within the proclaimed six kilometer danger zone of Mayon Volcano;
  • Victims of calamities especially typhoons;
  • Affected by the implementation of government projects;
  • Residing along dangerous river banks; and
  • Homeless and indigent families.

Nonetheless, the City Government has identified 869 households living in informal settlements.  These are commonly located along riverbanks, road rights-of-way, within the Philippine National Railways’ easement as well as within private properties. 

There are also four HLURB approved complex subdivisions in the City.  These cover almost 30 hectares of land with a total 1,735 lots.

 

Development Needs

The City Government has to continually respond to the needs of the homeless particularly those who live in informal settlements, or are victims of calamities.  The private sector shall, in turn, be encouraged to respond to the requirements of these households.

 

Goal and Objectives

Goal

- To uplift the housing conditions of constituents to help strengthen their economic conditions.  

 

Objectives

  • To create a local housing board committed to handle housing related issues;
  • To update the master list of potential socialized housing beneficiaries in compliance to RA 7279;
  • To provide socialized housing sites for low-income and underprivileged families;
  • To encourage private sector participation and investment in housing ; and
  • To monitor the compliance of housing developers with the relevant provisions of the Urban Development and Housing Act (Republic Act No. 7229).

 

Strategies

  • Direct LGU intervention in terms of providing affordable housing units for the homeless and victims of calamities;
  • Encourage private sector participation and investment in housing ; and 
  • Create a local housing board committed to handle housing related issues.
