Endeavoring a worldwide effort towards environmental conservation and protection, the City Government of Ligao has once again successfully led the celebration of the Earth Hour 2012 last March 31, 2012, 8:30-9:30 p.m. at the City Pavilion.
Recording a total number of 526 participants coming from different sectors, the event kicked off with the playing of the Earth Hour 2012 official video followed by a groundbreaking 60-second countdown paving way to the grand lights off.
The pavilion was surrounded by green and white balloons and lighted candles setting the atmosphere for the prayer (Oratio Imperata) led by Shimmy Capulong, SK Federation President, followed by the singing of the National Anthem.
In her welcome remarks, Hon. Linda P. Gonzalez, City Mayor, stressed the importance of celebrating such activity that will promote environmental awareness among the people in order to have a safe world to live in.
She likewise expressed her due recognition to the different sectors who were present to the celebration- the Sanguniang Kabataan(SK) led by Shimmy Capulong, the Commision on Youth(COY), the student from Ligao National High School, Bicol Regional Science High School, Deogracias P. Princesa Memorial High School, Mayon Institute of Science and Technology, Saint Mary’s Academy of Ligao, Bicol University, Ligao Community College and the staff of Department of Education- Ligao City Division, the students, teaching staff and administrators of private schools like, Aletheia Christian Academy, Cross Asia Academy, Computer Arts and Technological College of Ligao, the officers and members of Ligao Women’s Club, the officers and members of Mount Masaraga Climbers Association, Business Establishments, Barangay Councils, the Philippine National Police headed by PO Peñafiel, the members of the Legislative Department headed by Vice Mayor Patty Alsua, the 3rd Congressional District of Albay by Congressman Fernando V. Gonzalez and the officers and employees of LGU- Ligao City headed by Hon. Linda P. Gonzalez.
Moreover, Ligao City was indeed lucky to have the presence of a special guest in the name of Dr. Corazon PB. Claudio, President of EARTH Institute, Inc. In her message, related the celebration to an advocacy dubbed as SIMB, which stands for Start In My Backyard.
“To save earth and the environment , one has to start within oneself and that start includes planting, segregation, proper waste disposal and most of all self-discipline that all start at the very own backyard, ” Dr. Claudio emphasized.
Meanwhile, short documentary film about global warming and pressing challenges that the Filipino people face against climate change was shown.
Hon. Patty G. Alsua, City Vice-Mayor, led the one-minute silence to pray for the victims and affected people of climate change. This was followed by the singing of the “Heal the World”.
On behalf of the City Government, Hon. Jorlan T. Guanzon, Chairman of the Committee on Environment, extended his gratitude for a well attended and another successful Earth Hour.
Earth Hour was organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and has done a lot to raise awareness of sustainability issues. Hence, more than switching off lights, it’s all about giving people a voice and working together to create a better future for our planet.
